Don't Forget the Flowers!

If I think back on my own life to the milestones I’ve celebrated, flowers have often been a part of those memories. Two favorites of mine involve the celebration of BOTH sets of my grandparents’ milestone wedding anniversaries! (I apologize for the poor photo quality but, some of these photo files were not able to be uploaded clearly).

I remember the WHOLE family gathering together for dinner in my Florida hometown for both of these celebrations. Even our relatives who live in Hawaii made the trip! Stories were shared, toasts were given, cake was eaten and of course, a beautiful floral arrangement served as the focal point on each of these tables. Here are photos of my adorable grandparents on their special anniversaries:

Fast forward to 2012. That was a rather full year when it came to celebrations in my own life! I graduated college in the Spring and got married that Fall. Of course, flowers made an appearance at both of those events!

Though my family would not necessarily consider themselves to have “green thumbs” or “floral design genes,” they do try to put a lot of thought into the celebration of each milestone. I received this little bouquet of mums on my college graduation day from my parents. Although it was very simple, they told me they chose those flowers because they included my favorite color (purple) AND my college colors (garnet and gold)!

Now, keep in mind that all of these events took place before I decided to pursue a career in floral design. Even so, I’ll always remember the role that flowers played in creating each of these treasured memories…

My favorite color is purple so of course, I had to have lots of purple florals on my wedding day! Purple hydrangea, white roses and mini green hydrangea were the stars of the show.

Though I’m sure I would have designed totally different wedding flowers if I had gotten married now instead of five and half years ago, I still enjoy looking back on our wedding photos to remember all the arrangements that played a part in creating the atmosphere on our big day. Here's one of my favorite photos taken moments after we were officially married:

Flowers are often thought to be included in the “big” milestone events like I’ve listed above. But, I also think they can play a key part in celebrating “the little things” too.

Before I discovered floral design, I was a music teacher. One of my most treasured memories from that time was receiving flowers and sweet, handwritten cards from my students thanking me for being their teacher. My husband would also send me a mini bouquet on Teacher Appreciation Day, which I always loved!

I hope you've enjoyed reminiscing with me on some of my most fond flower memories! If you or someone you know has a milestone coming up (big or small!), I’d be honored to design something meaningful that will become part of a treasured memory in their own life story.
